The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help from the public in locating the source of a personal locator beacon (PLB). Yesterday evening, the Sheriff’s Office was notified that a PLB had been activated in the Eureka area. The beacon works by transmitting a signal to a satellite; in this case the signal is originating from the area of Ponderosa Court and E Street, Eureka. Law enforcement personnel have been unable to locate the PLB and it continues to transmit a signal. The signal is weak, and responders are speculating that the PLB may be inside a residence or may be covered by another object (perhaps even wrapped as a gift).
The Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone in the Henderson Center area who may own a personal locator beacon to check its status to ensure it has not been activated.
