The real meat of the election season is upon us — it’s debate time.

Candidates for Humboldt County District Attorney are sure to offer fireworks with four candidates running for the job held by Paul Gallegos since 2003.

The first debate will be held Thursday, April 15th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Senior Room of the Arcata Community Center and will air live on Channel 12. The debate will be hosted by the Redwood ACLU and moderated by ACLU chairman Greg Allen.

The second debate starts at 6pm on Friday, April 16 at the Humboldt Area Foundation. Focus will be on animal cruelty cases. More info at the Humboldt Vegetarian Society.

Gallegos, according to his Facebook page, is the “best criminal prosecutor we’ve had in Humboldt County.” His three challengers think otherwise. Tune in to see who makes the case. You be the judge.

Tribe gets funds to study concept of transit system [Daily Triplicate]
The Yurok Tribe will receive federal funds to perform a feasibility study to determine if a transit system could be used in Redwood National Park.

Last week, the Federal Transit Administration announced $24.8 million will go to national parks, forests and wildlife refuges in 20 states to help implement public transportation systems within those areas.

Obituaries: Michael “Mike” Roy Musch (Jan. 19, 1954 – Apr. 03, 2010) [Daily Triplicate]
Michael was born and raised in Fullerton, Calif. He graduated from Fullerton High School in 1972. Mike was in Future Famers of America and rode bulls and broncos in high school rodeos.

After graduation, Mike joined the Navy as a gunner’s mate. After the Navy, Mike started a family in La Mirada, Calif., where he owned a gardening service and participated as a volunteer fireman. He later became a tree trimmer for the city of Whittier. 13 years later Mike had a deep desire to move out of the big city and moved to Del Norte County, where he had family. Mike worked as a commercial fisherman for a few years and in 1995 Mike started with the Del Norte School District as a custodian. He worked at Mountain, Redwood, the high school and Pine Grove. Mike loved the interaction he had with co-workers, staff and students.
