On a recent three-day field trip, Reed took students in his oceanography class to the coastline around Arcata, where they tramped along the beaches and sailed on a chartered boat five miles off the coast. Reed had scrambled right up to the last minute to come up with the $3,200 needed for the six-hour voyage, finally patching together a combination of foundation grants, a $1,600 contribution from Humboldt State, and student contributions of $30 each.
