Eureka council approves earthquake repair funds, hears Public Works budget details

More funds were approved at Tuesday’s Eureka City Council meeting to repair some damage to city property from the Jan. 9 earthquake, but more money will be needed to make all the necessary repairs.

Movin’ the mud around

Observers of the Eureka Balloon Track are noticing heavy equipment rolling through the toxic mud to move Schmidbauer’s log deck.

Thanks to recent weeks of heavy rain the log trucks sink into the sludge and then disperse it down Broadway.

This stirring of downtown’s dioxin stew comes at a time when property owner Security National is stonewalling the Coastal Commission over the property, and Humboldt County residents debate the danger of moving toxins around the property before full characterization of the site.

Little earthquake hits off Lost Coast

A 3.9-magnitude quake shook the Petrolia area Monday morning. The earthquake occurred at 8:10 a.m. about 38 miles south-southwest of Eureka and 13 miles west of Petrolia at a depth of 13 miles.

It struck at 7:10 am this morning and was centered approximately 8 miles West of Petrolia. Depth was at an unusually low 20 KM. No reports of damages or injury, and was felt as a fairly brief jolt in Eureka. For more info see the USGS website at http://earthquake.usgs.gov.

A series of small earthquakes has hit northern California. The U.S. Geological Survey says a 3.1-magnitude quake struck shortly before midnight Saturday and was centered about 10 miles northeast of San Jose.
At 2:39 a.m. Sunday, another 3.1 temblor hit about 25 miles northwest of Santa Rosa, the USGS said.

Smith River Elementary School is raising money to help send Chilean children back to school after an 8.8-magnitude earthquake devastated much of the South American country Feb. 27.

It is estimated that more than 1 million children can’t attend classes because schools were so badly damaged by the earthquake.

All money raised will go to schools and educating children in Chile.
