It’s become something of a phenomenon here in Del Norte County.

Each spring, hundreds of kids, from as young as 4 to teens up to 16,
get out their bats and balls and take the community out to the ball
game for Del Norte Little League baseball and softball action.

Castle Rock Charter School and its principal will remain in place for the foreseeable future.

At a packed meeting last week, dozens of students, parents and
teachers urged the Del Norte County Unified School District Board to
keep the school open in light of being named as low-achieving by the
state.

There was a similar turnout Thursday.

After hearing that the School Board would not be applying for
federal grants that would force drastic changes on Castle Rock and its
staff, the crowd burst into applause.

Roller derby has made its way to Del Norte County.

What started as a few local women interested in starting a local league for the full-contact sport has grown to about 40 women.

“Women want to put fishnets and short skirts on and be tough and sexy,” Misa Hexiner, secretary for the league, said about the unconventional uniforms roller derby players wear. “And they’re not doing anything bad.”

They’re called the Tsunami Sirens.

The Del Norte Roller Derby league has generated a lot of interest within a few weeks. Housewives, athletes, mothers, women in their 20s and up into their 50s are pulling on skates; some know how to skate, others haven’t skated in years.

Incumbent Dean Wilson has lived in Del Norte County for 41 years, and has held the office of sheriff/coroner since 2002. He faces a challenge from Brian Clemann, a current California Highway Patrol officer and former Sheriff’s Office deputy, who was born in Crescent City and has been a lifelong county resident.

The Del Norte County Office of Education School Board is poised to make a decision about the future of Castle Rock Charter School on Thursday.

In March, the state placed Castle Rock on a list of the lowest-performing schools based on how students scored on state standards tests in English language arts and math.

Del Norte County will not join two agreements to remove four dams on the Klamath River and use a basin-wide approach for restoration.

After months of considering whether to become a party to the agreements — which have already been signed by several stakeholder groups in California and Oregon, including tribes, irrigators, fisherman and government agencies — the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday opted not to join the collaborative effort in exchange for a chance to change the scope of what’s included in the dam removal package.

Along with the seven other contestants, Alexandre was in an evening gown when the title was announced at the end of the program in the Crescent Elk Middle School auditorium. Earlier, she donned farm girl garb to deliver a speech, “So God Made a Farmer,” during the talent competition.

After graduation, Mike joined the Navy as a gunner’s mate. After the Navy, Mike started a family in La Mirada, Calif., where he owned a gardening service and participated as a volunteer fireman. He later became a tree trimmer for the city of Whittier. 13 years later Mike had a deep desire to move out of the big city and moved to Del Norte County, where he had family. Mike worked as a commercial fisherman for a few years and in 1995 Mike started with the Del Norte School District as a custodian. He worked at Mountain, Redwood, the high school and Pine Grove. Mike loved the interaction he had with co-workers, staff and students.

Del Norte County will receive $2.47 million from the state to help
alleviate rock slides on a portion of U.S. Highway 199 near Gasquet.

For the first time in five years a boys traveling soccer team has been formed in Del Norte County.

The goal is to improve the participants’ skills on the soccer field
and to be a feeder program for the Del Norte High boys soccer squad.

The Warriors F.C. under-12 club begins the year on Sunday at home at
3: p.m. against Ashland, Ore., at the high school soccer fields.

A Crescent City man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder Thursday after a March 29 fight left a man with a stab wound to the face.

The motive for the stabbing is still not known, Del Norte County Sheriff’s Commander Tim Athey said Friday.
