A sea of tea party-goers congregated at U.S. Highway 101 and Front
Street on Thursday, waving flags and signs, including one that said,
“Stop bleeding off our children’s future.”

One of the organizers, Mary Wilson, estimated more than 300 people showed up throughout the day.

It was the local version of tea parties held throughout the country on the day U.S. income taxes were due.

A taste of Bali is coming to Crescent City.

Thirty-five members of Gamelan Sekar Jaya (GSJ), a company formed
more than 30 years ago in the Bay Area, will appear at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday at the Crescent Elk Auditorium, as the fourth performance of
DNACA’s 27th season.

“This art form is very colorful, both the instruments and the
costumes,” said Wayne Vitale, a director of the Balinese music and
dance group. “There are lots of gold, red and blue colors.”

Vitale — who acted as co-director of GSJ for 19 years, ending in
late 2009 — will also be playing a drum called a kendang. The kendang
is the lead instrument and, he noted in a recent interview, there are
only two drummers in the group; the other will be a guest artist from
Bali.

Incumbent Dean Wilson has lived in Del Norte County for 41 years, and has held the office of sheriff/coroner since 2002. He faces a challenge from Brian Clemann, a current California Highway Patrol officer and former Sheriff’s Office deputy, who was born in Crescent City and has been a lifelong county resident.

Yeng Lo, 30, was sworn in as a reserve officer at Monday night’s
City Council meeting in front of a crowd of about 50 people from Del

A Crescent City man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder Thursday after a March 29 fight left a man with a stab wound to the face.

The motive for the stabbing is still not known, Del Norte County Sheriff’s Commander Tim Athey said Friday.

A 23-year-old local woman recounted her harrowing tale of survival at a preliminary hearing Tuesday for the man accused of killing Crescent City resident Amy Kaufmann.

Austy McCann testified she was with Kaufmann the night she was murdered at a house on P.J. Murphy Memorial Drive in Klamath, and was standing face-to-face with the suspected killer when he turned the murder weapon on her and asked her why he should let her live.

Dennis and her family moved to Modesto, when she was in the 6th grade. She graduated from Modesto High School in 1955. She received her AA degree from Modesto Junior College and later earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Sacramento State College. She began her teaching career in Modesto and then went on to teach in Crescent City. Dennis taught for 35 years in Crescent City and spent 33 of those years at Joe Hamilton Elementary School in room 9.

Crescent City will save an additional $2 million in debt repayment on a $43 million infrastructure loan with the State Water Resources Control Board to improve the municipal wastewater treatment plant due to an unexpected provision in an amendment to the finance agreement that was approved Monday by the City Council.

In October, the state allowed the city to extend the repayment term of its loan from 20 to 30 years, something that would increase the total amount of interest accrued on the principal but ease the burden on ratepayers who had seen their bills rise to help pay for the new sewer plant.

The plans are extravagant.

But when Elk Valley Rancheria’s new casino and resort will be built is not clear.

The resort will resemble a lodge in the woods, sitting high on a hill south of Crescent City framed by redwoods and Douglas firs, looking down at the ocean.

Elk Valley Rancheria officials said that the design and financing of the project is still being finalized and there is not yet a start date for construction.

“It may seem like it’s going slow, but we’re moving forward,” said Chris Howard, director of public relations, economic development and environmental services, during a presentation at the Economic Summit last Saturday.
