Maggie the cattle dog headed back to the ranch Wednesday.

Maggie the cattle-herding border collie is back with owner John Reader at his Nevada County spread. After her release Wednesday from Loomis Basin Veterinary Clinic, she’ll still need months to recover from being run over by a driver last month. Dozens of people donated to help pay for Maggie’s treatment.

SECOND – Maggie, the injured cattle dog, licks her wounds briefly as she is released from Loomis Basin Veterinary Hospital after surgery and treatment from being hit by a car during a cattle drive three weeks ago. The driver of the vehicle was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon, cruelty to animals and vandalism. Over the past few weeks members of the community donated enough money to cover her treatment. Her prognosis is very good. July 6, 2011

Fifteen years after passage of the state’s landmark “three strikes” sentencing law, prosecutors in Sacramento and throughout California have become far more selective in applying the full force of the statute, reducing the number of lifetime prison terms being sought for third strikers to a relative trickle.

Steve Cooley refined the application of “three strikes” prosecutions after he was elected Los Angeles County district attorney in 2000.

Mike Reynolds authored “three strikes,” then followed it with 1998′s “10-20-life” law, imposing harsh sentences for using a gun during a crime.

Continuing an long-standing trend, gasoline and diesel fuel use in California declined in both March and the first quarter of this year.

Leroy Zerlang inspects the Golden Rule after hauling it to his Eureka boatyard. It had been at the bottom of Humboldt Bay.

The Golden Rule sits high and dry but also heavily damaged and deteriorated on the sand near Humboldt Bay late last summer. Much work has since been completed by members of two Humboldt County chapters of Veterans for Peace.

At a sprawling manufacturing complex, hundreds of Chinese laborers are now completing work on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

A worker at Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries welds parts of a steel section of the new eastern span of the Bay Bridge built in China. One steel polisher says he makes $12 a day at the plant.
