Northcrest Drive traffic delays seem to be due to poor planning

In response to the Aug. 31 front-page article entitled, “Congestion on Northcrest Drive will continue,” today I must state my opinion.

The article stated the roadwork will continue through November and the expected wait time is up to 15 minutes in either direction.

I live near the roadwork and have a need to go into town at least twice a week, sometimes more often.

Each and every time I’ve had to pass through the roadwork, I can’t believe the idiocy of the so-called planning.

The number of residences and businesses that they are blocking access to is too numerous to count.

Only 50-100 feet of road should be worked on at a time from start to completion. Then move on to the next 50-100 feet.

One lane should always be open to traffic! On a recent morning they had both lanes backed up with traffic.

TEA PARTY SHERIFF

TEA PARTY SHERIFF [Daily Triplicate]
Dean Wilson is filling two high-profile roles in county

One man, two high-profile roles.

Dean Wilson has been sheriff of Del Norte County since 2002. Two years ago, he helped start the local chapter of the Tea Party Patriots and he continues to serve as its leader.

He said he’s had no problem keeping the roles separate, but it’s an intriguing juxtaposition.

For example, employees of the Sheriff’s Department don’t necessarily agree that public employees’ benefits are “overgenerous” as Wilson and most Tea Party members do.

Some people don’t believe it’s appropriate for a top law enforcement official to take on such a partisan role. The chairwoman of the county Democratic Party calls it “offensive.”

Sometimes Wilson’s two roles don’t seem to mesh at all. As a Tea Party leader he wants lower taxes and less government, but as a sheriff he says his department should not be further downsized — even if some of its responsibilities are someday taken away because of the city annexing land currently in unincorporated county areas.

Authorities: There are plenty more

Authorities have condemned what they called a “meth flophouse” in Crescent City after serving a search warrant on one of the residents.

Often alerted by neighbors, they’re aware of many more such residences where people sell and use drugs in Del Norte County, said sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Morris.

When they kicked down the doors to a house and trailer at 115 Lela St. on Friday, authorities were greeted with a stench of urine, garbage and furniture in every room and the evidence of drug use.

Recalls afoot again in city

City Councilwoman Kathryn Murray has been served with papers that state there is a recall petition against her circulating throughout Crescent City.

As of Friday, city officials said Murray is the only council member to be served so far.

On Aug. 15, a letter of intent to circulate a recall petition was given to City Councilwoman Kelly Schellong, Mayor Charles Slert and Murray by Business Improvement District opponents. These council members voted not to dissolve the BID, as the opponents had sought.

Murray has served on the council since 2008 and has been served with a notice of intent to recall multiple times, along with her colleagues Slert and Schellong. One recall petition was initiated against Councilwoman Donna Westfall.

All the previous recall efforts have failed.

Tthe name Blackburn goes back a long way for Warrior fans, since Chuck Blackburn first started teaching at Redwood School in the late 1950s.

Chuck has a son, Danny, that was a true multi-sport performer for the blue and gold of Del Norte. When Dan entered high school in the fall of 1974, he got involved in sports right away. Former Warrior coach Larry Amos said from the day Danny entered school he was an outstanding teammate, an excellent athlete and fun to be around.

Danny played football, basketball and golf all four years. During his senior year he played on the football team that defeated Eureka for the first time since 1964.

Instead of complaining about the community, volunteer your help

There has been a lot of grumbling and frustration over some of the changes happening around town.

It’s very easy to criticize and second-guess decisions made by others, much harder to show up and give constructive input.

I challenge everyone to take some time, consider what things in our community are really important to you and then get involved … maybe it’s Del Norte Reads or cleaning up the cemetery … maybe it’s CASA, or the Christmas Parade or the Front Street redesign project.

Don’t complain later, get involved now. And, whatever your opinion on the process, Tsunami Landing has never looked better.

Pages of History: Park turns into tourist attraction

Pages of History: Park turns into tourist attraction [Daily Triplicate]
From the pages of the Del Norte Triplicate, September 1941.

Attaining greater popularity daily, Staley’s Skeleton Park near Fort Dick is becoming Del Norte’s greatest tourist attraction.

The area displays a graphic drama of the doom of the forests, the devastation caused by the coming of man, and the unquenchable thirst of the giant redwoods for life eternal.

There redwoods stand as grim specters, charred but living sentinels of the ages. Logs lie supine that once were giants. Maimed, twisted in death throes, gallantly fighting the battle for life, these old monarchs seemingly refuse to bow their heads in defeat.

Authorities take to the air in pot search

They’re out there.

Every summer thousands of people drive to this remote patch of California where the rivers are limpid, the forests lush and green.

There’s hikers on the trails, swimmers in the water and campers in the parks.

Then there’s them.

How victim died affects the charges

Editor’s note: The following account contains graphic descriptions that may not be suitable for all readers.

A preliminary hearing for murder suspect Jarrod Wyatt was held Wednesday to determine whether there’s enough evidence to add a special circumstance of murder with torture to the charges against him.

Del Norte County District Attorney Jon Alexander said this special circumstance would allow him to seek a conviction of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Wyatt, 27, a former mixed martial arts fighter, is accused of beating his friend Taylor Powell, 21, of Crescent City, to death on March 21, 2010, and removing his heart while he was still alive.
